What is changing? Some prayers and responses within the Mass will change slightly from what we are currently using. We will need to focus on the new words in order to participate as a community at Mass. The changes are a result of the revised translation of the Latin Roman Missal, the book that all Catholics use to celebrate Mass. We will soon begin using a 3rd English edition in all English-speaking countries throughout the world. Why are the changes happening? Blessed John Paul II promoted the spiritual rejuvenation of the Church, and called for all nations to complete the liturgical renewal begun with Vatican II. When he realized that translations of the Mass around the world varied in content, he announced the need for another translation. The result was a translation that would more clearly reflect the original Latin and would unify all Catholics. Essentially, John Paul II called us to become a more universal church. When will the changes take effect? In all U.S. parishes, we will begin using the revised translation on November 26-27, 2011 – The First Sunday of Advent. At St. Patrick’s we will have pew cards and commentators to help smooth the transition. How can I prepare?
1. Watch the bulletin, IN FOCUS, and parish website for more information. Where can I find more information? Visit the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops website at www.usccb.org/romanmissal . There you can find comparisons of the current and revised prayers, FAQ’s, and “YouTube” videos explaining the project’s history and the principles used in this translation.
